Making, tinkering and hacking of fashion. Already in its third year our event #FASHIONTECH Berlin explores the convergence of fashion and technology. And we are happy to announce #FASHIONTECH LAB BERLIN at re:publica 2017! This versatile format fuses many disciplines. It presents new materials and textile technologies visitors can get their hands on at workshops at our makerspace. At the same time we want to explore the intersection of sociology or politics and fashion, fashion design and textile design at talkshows. What's in the future for the development and production of textiles? We are curious!

#FASHIONTECH LAB BERLIN is curated by re:publica. The series of events was born out of a cooperative effort between re:publica and PREMIUM International Fashion Trade Show. Bringing together gadgets, hacking and design this crossover format proves its importance with 3,500 participants at the most recent event in June 2016.

At the last #FASHIONTECH Berlin international experts presented their projects and offered interesting insights. The events featured speakers from Google, Brands4Friends / ebay Fashion, Pinterest, Amazon Fashion, WIRED Germany, Microsoft and Facebook, as well as representatives from startups and designers, including Laura Wass of WXYZ jewelry, Lisa Lang of ElektroCouture, 3M New Ventures' Thomas Andrae and 3D print designer Anouk Wipprecht.

Along with attending numerous talks, participants were able to use a dedicated exhibition area to directly engage with designers and entrepreneurs and get stuck in with some DIY action. They also attended workshops to learn about the full fashion-meets-tech spectrum and experimented with materials, including LEDs.

To learn more about past #FASHIONTECH Berlin events, check out our summaries below. If you can't wait for the next event to kick off, you can entertain yourself in the meantime by going to the re:publica YouTube channel, which features all of the talks.

We will be using digital fabrication technologies to create our own textile tool: a weaving loom that you will be able to bring home to start weaving your own textiles.

This doesn’t only enable you to learn the basics of weaving but also the ones of laser cutting.

The workshop is meant to inspire to use digital fabrication technologies to make tools and to encourage to combine both digital and analog production techniques.

Fashion tech and privacy-by-design?! What does fashion have to do with privacy? A lot, if the technology used in fashion tech collects and processes personal data. This can be the case, for example, if a sensor embedded within a pair of running shoes captures the steps and velocity of the wearer in order to analyze the increase in performance. If the runner is able to access that data via a personal login on the website of the manufacturer, then this kind of data is personalized and data protection law applies. But don’t panic: Data protection law doesn’t need to spoil all the fun. On the contrary, if developers of data-driven products understand data protection law as just another factor increasing the quality of those products, then the question is not: Is this product legal or illegal? Rather it is: How can I develop the product in a way that satisfies the needs of my customer? This is the theme of the workshop “Fashion Tech and Privacy-by-Design.” In this workshop, we will enable you to develop your products in a way that makes data protection law a competitive advantage, rather than a constant threat.

In contexts where intolerance grows and oppression becomes evident, one has to use and reinvent the tools to show disagreement and trying with love to generate empathy, to stimulate new points of view that promote diversity and equality. We believe that many voices have to be heard and we propose to use the wearable technology as an element that goes beyond simple glowing and becomes a means of communication. Let's use the wearable as an element that can convey a message!

If you have a message to share with the world, come and join us in this workshop! We will show you how to use this technology with a basic sewn circuit as a way to express yourself and take it with you everywhere!

3D printing fashion at home is a myth: environmentally unfriendly plastics which as scratchy and uncomfortable to wear combined with abstract and bulky designs means that it just won't catch on.
Today we will challenge this concept and show how 3D printed fashion is both sustainable, comfortable and even washable

Create your own unique pattern in illustrator and turn this into a fully compostable, flexible fashion accessory that you can wear, love, wash and then compost.

    Limited to 10 participants
  • Heads up! The final deadline for submissions for the #FASHIONTECH LAB BERLIN at the #rp17 is coming up on January 31st. We look forward to all of your ideas surrounding the topic of fashion, textiles and technology.
